Math Colloquium: Niles Johnson, Ohio State University

Visualizing the Hopf fibration -
The Hopf fibration is a kind of projection from the 3-dimensional sphere to the 2-dimensional one.  We will describe fibrations in general, and then explain how quaternion arithmetic gives this particular fibration due to Hopf.  Then we will use its algebraic and topological properties to visualize the Hopf fibration.  We will describe several of the 4-dimensional phenomena that can be understood in this way, and show lots of pictures!
