The play is a response to the increasingly violent, spiraling world that we’ve been living in for the last few years. Kristen started writing the text in 2014 and it has been performed in various forms since 2017. It’s an attempt to transform feelings of despair, grief, and rage into something of value, into positive action, into something of beauty that might uplift and create space and occasion for imagination and community.
The plot follows a motley assortment of well-meaning but ineffectual people who find themselves at a crisis point in their lives and are whisked away to an asterism to train to get out of their own way and prepare for the Bright Future, which they return to Earth to enact.
The People’s Republic of Valerie has been described as "part boot-camp space-travel memoir, part how-to manual for the community to construct a paradise.”
More info, streaming links and reservations for the in person viewing parties on Friday and Saturday in the PAB atrium here.
“In the Bright Future, the environmental rampage will have ended, amnesty will be given to all those who return to their senses, and it will be said, ‘We are not free yet, but we are on our way!’ "
