About this Event
SCHEDULE UPDATE: Please note that the schedule for this class has been updated as of January 15. The new schedule now includes Monday, January 20, Wednesday, January 22, and Thursday, January 23.
Reed's Institutional Review Board (IRB) will screen documentaries describing various scientific projects from the 20th century that raise serious ethics & oversight concerns. We believe that confronting these chapters in the history of science, despite being dark and sometimes challenging to engage with, provide us with important opportunities to do better. Following each screening (5pm in Psych 105), we will have a group discussion about what can be learned from these historical examples about the importance of ethical oversight and community voices.
Monday, January 20th: Spaceship Earth (2020), a documentary about the Biosphere 2 project.
Wednesday, January 22nd: The Deadly Deception (1993) and Bad Blood (1993), two retrospectives on the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study.
Thursday, January 23rd: The Eugenics Crusade (2018), a profile of the rise and fall of the eugenics movement in America in the early 20th century.
Instructors: Greg Jensen (Faculty), Kayla Johnston (Staff) and Divine Vasquez (Student).
