Join us in Eliot Chapel for our annual survivor speak-out: a time for those impacted by sexual violence to have their stories’ heard in supportive community. Stories may be expressed in poems, essays, art collections, and can be read anonymously by a SHARE student staff member. You may submit in advance, or read your own work in person.
Take Back the Night is an annual community event demanding an end to sexual violence, accountability for offenders, and support for survivors. Held each year on a night in April–Sexual Assault Awareness Month–Reed participates in this tradition alongside other colleges and community organizations across the world. Started in the United States in 1973, Take Back the Night has taken the form of marches, rallies, and community gatherings throughout the years.
All of us have the right to be free from violence, the right to be heard, and the right to reclaim those rights if they are violated. Too often survivors are shamed, blamed, and silenced; we take back the night by uplifting survivor stories and honoring the experiences shared. By participating in Take Back the Night, we recognize that sexual violence affects all of us, and that it will take all of us to end it.
The event is open to current students, with an emphasis on creating space for survivors to be in community with other survivors and their alliles. SHARE student staff will be present for any support you may need. If you would like more information about accessibility or disability accommodations or if you have any questions, please email L. at mattsonl@reed.edu or reach out to the student team at share@reed.du.
