Describing QuantCrit as a Methodological Framework for Discipline-Based Education Research
Dr. Paulette Vincent-Ruz, New Mexico State University & Dr. Kathryn Hosbein, Middle Tennessee State University
Abstract: If our intention as STEM education researchers is to address educational inequity, our research requires paradigms aligned with subverting harmful narratives in favor of narratives aligned with broadening participation and success for all students. QuantCrit is a specific methodological framework that takes the principles of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and adapts them to our understanding of numbers and data. The main objective of this talk is to provide a methodological framework for the use of quantitative methods through a critical lens for STEM education research. We will provide the historical context surrounding the development of the statistical methods we use today and how they are at odds with equity and justice goals, discuss QuantCrit as a methodological framework, and illustrate how to apply QuantCrit tenets.
