Dr. Mozina will lecture on, "Living Daoism and the Study of Ritual."
Living religion in the small towns and rural hamlets of China is still terra incognita for most students of religion. With film and photography, this talk shows something of the ritual life of Daoist ritual masters in a corner of rural south China. We shall see how their ritual performances are imbued with sophisticated Daoist theories of ritual devised during an explosion of religious thought and practice in China 800 years ago. When explored, we discover that these non-western theories push against dominant theories of ritual in the modern west.
