The Griot Project Winter Creative Workshop will serve as a dynamic and transformative creative incubator for the development of a new interdisciplinary performance. This project will explore the vital role of griots—keepers of oral tradition—and how this ancestral position shapes the lineage, culture, and communities they serve. By weaving together movement, music, and text, we will investigate the griot’s enduring influence across time and space, connecting the traditions of West Africa with the lived experiences of Black communities in the Diaspora. This project will explore how the griot’s role persists in diasporic contexts today, particularly in the ways Black elders in communities across the globe continue to act as cultural stewards, transmitting tradition and fostering intergenerational bonds.
