In this day and age, the world of rock climbing can be one that is challenging to break into without an experienced mentor to guide a newcomer through concepts of safety, technical language, basic skills, and much, much more. Historically, climbing, like many other outdoor sports in the United States, has been occupied almost exclusively by cisgender, white men, which has lead to challenging dynamics for any climber who doesn't fit that specific description. In this course we will be not only going over the introductory tools a climber needs to manifest their own progress in practicing the sport, but we will also be actively engaging with climbing stories and narratives that represent th, sometimes hidden but blooming diversity within the sport, as well as how to foster inclusive environmental stewardship within the climbing community. Please wear shoes appropriate for climbing. Led by Irving Rettig.
