Pathways to Industry: the Knight Campus Graduate Internship Program (KCGIP) at UO

https://internship.uoregon.edu/

Many physics undergraduates assume the natural next steps after graduation are a doctoral degree followed by a position in academia, but far more physicists end up working in industry than in tenure-track academic positions. The University of Oregon offers unique applied master's degrees consisting of 6-9 months of lab-intensive coursework followed by a 9-month paid internship. I'll discuss several of the programs offered (for physics majors, Semiconductor Device Processing, Optical Materials and Devices, and Bioinformatics are most relevant) and future industrial career paths. The program also emphasizes professional development and alumni networking, resources often neglected in traditional academic tracks that have a big impact on career success. I will share alumni stories and my own learning experiences in transitioning from teaching at Reed College to my current position as the director of the KCGIP Optics Program.
