Constructed languages (or conlangs) are languages which are invented by individuals rather than evolving naturally within speech communities. The term ‘conlang’ encompasses not only auxiliary languages like Esperanto, but also languages created for artistic reasons or to provide depth to a fictional universe. Conlangs of the latter type include Klingon (Star Trek), Na’vi (Avatar), Dothraki (Game of Thrones), and the Elvish languages from The Lord of the Rings. This workshop provides an introduction to conlanging as a hobby, focusing on the invention of artistic languages. We will discuss strategies and resources for getting started making your own language. Topics that we will cover include establishing basic design principles for your language, developing a sound system and grammar, devising core vocabulary, creating a writing system, etc. The focus of the workshop will be adjusted depending on the background and interests of the participants. If any participants have prior experience with conlanging and wish to share their work with others, we will set aside time at the end of the workshop for people to present their projects.
