About this Event
(Course taught by Jerry Shurman, math department.) Long ago, my A.P. calculus course left me believing that calculus is technical and complicated, requiring thorough preparation in exponentials, logarithms, and trigonometric functions. In fact calculus can be built cogently only on high school algebra and plausible intuition about where certain processes tend as they run. In particular, key derivatives can be obtained without handwaving, and key integrals can be computed without invoking the mysterious Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Most fall semesters I teach a section of Math 111 based on these ideas, but that class is understandably skipped by many incoming students who place out of calculus. This two-hour Paideia course is a quick gloss of that class for anybody interested in a brief version.
