Pancho Savery, professor of English and humanities (1995–), leads this 4-day journey to Cuba
December 30, 2020–January 2, 2021 (with possible extension to January 3).
Frozen-in-time yet swirling with change, Cuba is entering a period of dramatic economic, social and cultural transformation in the post-Castro era. At this pivotal moment, we will gain an invaluable first-hand understanding of the island through the eyes of the people who live there, on this licensed Support of the Cuban People program. Imagine yourself on a rooftop terrace in Old Havana, meeting with Cuban artists and educators, listening to rumba and salsa, and reflecting on Havana’s remarkable history, burgeoning present, and fascinating future.
This trip, designed exclusively for Reed College alumni, will allow us to discuss the history, political economy, culture, and increasing entrepreneurship of the Cuban people during this exceptional and energizing moment in the country's history. Become immersed in the vibrant photography and contemporary art scene, a surprising fount of sociopolitical thought, and support Cubans who are thriving with creative expression. Come away from this adventure with a knowledge and insight of the deep vibrancy of Cuban life, while learning and participating in traditions they celebrate at the end of the year.
Special note on COVID-19: We understand that travelers are weary of booking arrangements because of the growing concern of COVID-19. If authorities deem it unsafe to travel to Cuba, we will cancel the trip no later than 30 days before departure as safety is always our number one priority. In the event of cancellation on our end due to COVID-19 concerns, we will refund all participants in full.
