Constructed languages (or conlangs) are languages which are invented by individuals rather than evolving naturally within speech communities. This course provides a brief introduction to conlanging as a hobby, with a focus on creating languages for artistic reasons or to provide depth to a fictional universe (well-known examples include Klingon from "Star Trek", Na’vi from "Avatar", Dothraki from "Game of Thrones", and the Elvish languages from "The Lord of the Rings"). In the first session we discuss basic strategies and resources for getting started making your own language, including establishing basic design principles, developing a sound system and grammar, and devising core vocabulary. In the second session we will focus on more advanced topics chosen by the participants in the first session (example topics could include writing systems, case and agreement, idioms and metaphors, building vocabulary, etc.).
