About this Event
Amateur radio is a hobby centered around noncommercial, educational, research, and hobby use of two-way radio communications in all its forms.
This class will teach you about the basics of amateur radio: what we do, why we do it, and how we do it. Learn about superpowered walkie talkies, talking internationally on shortwave radio, and hunting down hidden transmitters and radio interference. You'll also learn how the CSOs', railroads', transit, and aircraft radios work, and how you can build trackers for stratospheric balloons.
To transmit on amateur radio frequencies, you need a license—but we'll show you how to study for the exam (which might just be the easiest exam you'll ever take at Reed) and how to get started.
This class has two sections. Both sections are identical.
