About this Event
My class will explore how America's dependence on cars reshaped cities, the economy, development, the environment, and democracy. I will assign optional readings, maps, images, podcasts, and videos that should help deepen understanding of the topic, but the class will be accessible without these. The class will follow the classic lecture-discussion style I have come to love at Reed. Each class will begin with a brief talk from an exciting and influential thought leader in the space (speaker list to come later). Over the course of the class, we’ll trace how car-centered planning deepened racial inequities, fueled suburban sprawl, and eroded public life. I intend this class to be an eye opening and informative exposition on car-centrism and its consequences. Attendance of all classes is not expected or required, as each lecture will be standalone, but I hope you will want to come to all of them!
