GRIOT invites you on a journey from Senegal to Brazil and into the American South. Witness how this keeper of oral tradition impacts the communities, lineage, and culture where they live. In movement, music, and memory, audiences witness the Griot’s mix of virtuosic talent, role as a lineage keeper, and essential presence in communities today. From baobabs to beaches, we cross country borders and the boundaries we impose on ourselves. Choreographed by Oluyinka Akinjiola and Michael Galen, music developed and performed with Tama master & Griot Massamba Diop, an immersive score created by Galen incorporating field recordings from Brazil and Senegal.
The first half introduces you to the manifestations of griots in the world: the teacher, the artist and the preacher. We experience these powerful presences while also realizing that we are on a journey ourselves. Surrounding a baobab, audiences will watch as individuals journey through time, geographical location, and encounters with Griots. The journey has a role for the audience, challenging viewers to make choices and respond to encounters. By the second half, everyone in the theater is on the same journey and takes on the role of the Griot.
