Consciousness, awareness, and experience have long been considered outside the reach of experimental science. Recent advances in computer technology and biotechnical neuroscience have pushed the boundaries back. The class is an overview of where this trend might lead. If we do develop a full model of consciousness, what might this mean for our ethical systems, the major religions, machine intelligence, and our social and personal relationships? We will look at several models of awareness theory, drawing mainly on Integrated Information Theory. The goal of the class is to assess the questions that arise from these theories, and (possibly) an attempt at some answers. Led by Mark McLean.
