Lucy Guerin has been creating dances for the last 30 years.  In this talk, she will discuss her choreographic work, what has shaped it, and how her interests have evolved over time. She will focus on four works to show the ideas, influences, dancers, and circumstances that have contributed to her choreographic thinking.  In addition, she will talk about where she is now, what's next, and what it is like to create work in Australia.

Guerin is an Australian choreographer dedicated to challenging and extending the art of contemporary dance. Committed to the exploration of everyday events and the redefinition of the formal concerns of dance, Guerin’s productions are generated through an experimental approach to creative process and may involve voice, video, sound, text and industrial design as well as Guerin’s lucid physical structures. These choreographic explorations strive for visual, emotional and physical revelations that could not be generated or communicated in any other art form than dance. Guerin’s company, Lucy Guerin Inc, has been a major influence on the growing identity of Australian dance which stems from the Company’s programmatic research into choreographic practice supported through several initiatives, including Pieces for curated programs of new dance works by emerging choreographers in Melbourne workshops with local and international artists, and maintains an artist-in-residence programs.
