CRES Colloquium Series: "Kashmir: Postcolonial Colonialism?"

with Reed Anthropology Professor Anand Vaidya

Comparative Race and Ethnicity Studies (CRES) invites you to CRES Colloquium, a series of discussions of classic works, contemporary events, and student research. All are welcome!

On August 5, India's parliament voted to revoke Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which established the terms of Kashmir's incorporation into the Union of India and provided limited autonomy for the region. Since August, the people of Kashmir have lived under a military lockdown, with military checkpoints, closed schools, and severely limited communications with the outside world. This talk places these recent turns in Kashmir in a longer legal and political history of the region, asking what implications India's relationship with Kashmir has for an understanding of the Indian state.
