Navigational Surprises in Organic Synthesis

Abstract: During research in the organic chemistry laboratory, we sometimes find that experiments give us unexpected results.  When assembling complex molecules in the laboratory, sometimes the things we learn accidentally are frustrating and disappointing, but sometimes they are the tip of an interesting iceberg.  Unexpected results can be important clues that help us recalibrate our synthetic strategy, based on a new understanding of how our molecules behave.  In some cases, these surprise results help us discover novel reaction chemistry as well.
