The Reed College sociology department invites you to a talk by Professor Alexandra Hrycak and Molly Johnson '19.
This presentation focuses on public responses to a notorious 2012 gang rape in Ukraine. Feminist and critical media studies perspectives are used to provide an understanding of a rape case that attracted months of protest and media attention. Results reveal that the framing of sexual assault in postcommunist media reproduces Stalinist discourses of collective blame that hold victims, perpetrators, and their parents collectively culpable for gender violence.
This summer research project was funded through the generosity of the Seminatore Memorial Collaborative Summer Research Grant.
Light refreshments will be served. Free and open to the public.
