Kristan Kennedy is the recipient of the twenty-seventh annual Bonnie Bronson Fellowship Award. Kennedy is a Portland-based artist whose work takes the form of abstract paintings on linen. She is the Artistic Director and Visual Art Curator at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. She directs PICA’s Precipice Fund, which provides support for artists’ organizations, projects, and publications. She teaches contemporary art history at Portland State University. Kennedy is represented by Fourteen30 Contemporary in Portland, Oregon.
Since its inception in 1992, the Bronson Fund—named after the late American painter and sculptor Bonnie Bronson—has annually awarded a no-strings-attached cash prize (this year’s prize is $10,000) to an artist of outstanding merit who lives and works in the Pacific Northwest. In addition, the Bronson Fundpurchases artwork by each new Fellow, adding it to the Bronson Collection. The collection is on long-term loan to Reed College, where it is exhibited throughout the campus and curated by the Director of the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Stephanie Snyder.
Kristan Kennedy earned her B.F.A. at New York State College of Art and Design at Alfred University in 1994. Since that time, she has been a vital contributor to the arts in Portland—through her art, as an educator at Portland State University, and by creating opportunities for others in her multiple roles at PICA—Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. The Bronson Fellowship recognizes all of these contributions—but most importantly acknowledges and celebrates Kennedy’s accomplishments as an artist.
Over the past ten years, Kennedy has worked and played with the vocabulary of abstraction in painting. She has experimented with methods of making and leaving marks on painter’s linen, and draping and suspending the resulting artworks in relationship to furniture or the architecture of a particular space.
