"Regulatory Strategies for Improving Access to Quality, Affordable Medicines Around the World"

Access to safe, effective, and affordable medicines is critical for achieving universal health coverage, a major priority for the World Health Organization and many countries around the world. Currently, however, an estimated 2 billion people lack access to essential medicines. National and international regulatory authorities have an important role in improving access to lifesaving medicines. On the one hand, regulatory authorities are responsible for providing enough regulation that the medicines within a country or region are safe and effective. On the other hand, they cannot provide so much regulation that medicines become unaffordable or cannot reach the people who need them, especially during public health emergencies. Finding the right regulatory balance can be challenging, especially when resources are limited. This talk will explore some of the novel strategies that regulatory authorities around the world are using to improve access to quality, affordable medicines.

Dr. Kristin Harper is a writer and editor that focuses on biomedical and public health.
