DESCRIPTION:This Friday's Biology Department Seminar speaker is:\n\n\nAnne
 W. Thompson\, Ph.D.\nPortland State University\n\n“Ecology and Dynamics of
 the Ocean’s Invisible Forest”\n\nFriday\, March 1\, 2019\n4:10 pm Seminar b

edu if you would like to go to lunch with Dr. Thompson on Friday at noon.\n
\nAbstract: The oxygen in every fifth breath you take was produced by phyto
plankton\, the abundant photosynthetic microorganisms of the ocean. These a
bundant and tiny cells create “The Invisible Forest”\, an ecosystem that co
ntributes to global primary productivity on the same scale as forests and g
rasslands\, only it is invisible to our eyes. To understand how the Earth S
ystem works\, we must understand the ecology of phytoplankton. The phytopla
nkton Prochlorococcus is the most abundant photosynthetic cell on Earth. Pr
ochlorococcus thrives in the vast warm and nutrient poor surface oceans far
from land. Here\, we present the results of oceanographic field expedition
s and laboratory experiments that examine how genetic diversity and oceanog
raphic factors control the contributions of Prochlorococcus to the ocean ec
osystem.\n\nAdditional Biology Department seminars can be found on-line\, i
