Translational Fire Ecology in a Warming World
Aaron Ramirez, Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies, will talk about his work with students in the field of Translational Fire Ecology. Climate change and past land use decisions have contributed to rapidly increasing fire risks in the Pacific Northwest. As a consequence, natural resource managers are actively working to mitigate these risks through ecological restoration and other actions within our native forests. This important work requires leveraging our best scientific knowledge to inform environmental management decisions, i.e. "translating" science into better informed practice. But, this translation of science is not an automatic outcome of standard scientific processes. It requires building partnerships between natural resource managers, environmental policy makers, scientists, indigenous communities and other stakeholders and having those constituencies work together to generate new information through a translational science process. This talk will highlight the Ramirez Lab's approach to engaging in translational fire science and creating opportunities for student involvement through course-based research projects, the Reed Senior Thesis, summer research fellowships and post-bacc research opportunities.
