Beatbox is a form of vocal percussion that came out of hip-hop in the 80s, pioneered by names such as Doug E. Fresh and Biz Markie. However, as other elements of hip-hop culture became more mainstream, beatbox fell behind. Out of the media spotlight, the beatbox community has been growing ever since, gaining members all over the world, with the largest youtube channel dedicated to beatbox, Swissbeatbox, approaching 4.5 million subscribers. This class will cover the origins of beatbox in the context of hip-hop culture, the evolution of beatbox culture and technique over the years, and end with a lesson in some basic techniques. Participants should bring something to drink, as beatboxing with a dry mouth is hard and doesn't sound as good. Led by Haven Davis.
