Dr. Jamele Watkins will discuss her research on the emerging genre of Black German theater. In her work, Watkins analyzes the intersections of race, gender, and place as evoked by contemporary Afro-German plays, and she will frame this around the poetry of May Ayim. She argues that this theater is empowering through intertextuality and references to the diaspora. Using theories by Patricia Hill Collins, Michelle M. Wright, and Jacqueline Nassy Brown, Watkins analyzes the various ways Afro-German actors perform diaspora through creating bonds beyond boundaries.
