Please join us for a discussion group with visiting dance scholar Jade Power-Sotomayor! There is no required reading, and no dance experience is necessary to participate.
This presentation and discussion proposes that engaging with dance practices and body-centered pedagogies are a key strategy for challenging the white supremacy and heteropatriarchy that continue to define institutional cultures despite efforts to be inclusive and diverse. Drawing from community dance/ing practices of bomba and son jarocho, we will look at how dance can serve to "represent" marginalized cultures within an institution but more importantly, how these practices enact the relational politics that are at the core of non-Western knowledge-making projects.
